When Is the Best Time to Shell at Siesta Key?

The best time to shell at Siesta Key is at low tide, especially the morning after a storm or winter cold front, and in the cooler months from late fall through early spring. For the sand dollars Siesta Key is known for, pick a calm day and a low tide near Big Pass.

Best time of year

Many local shellers favor late fall through early spring, when cold fronts are common. Wind and waves push shells onto the beach, and the morning after a front is often the best time to look. Summer is usually calmer, which is easier for wading, but fewer fresh shells tend to get pushed up.

Best tide and time of day

Low tide uncovers more beach and more of the shallow sandbar, so more shells are within reach. NOAA publishes free tide predictions for the Sarasota area. A good plan is to arrive about an hour before low tide and keep looking as the water turns. Early morning also means fewer people have walked the shell line ahead of you.

Why night shelling works at Siesta Key

Many of the animals that make these shells are active after dark, and a bright light shows the shapes and edges on the bottom. Siesta Key's fine white sand makes pale shells stand out against it. Water is also calm and cool in the evening.

On our tour: we meet at 1460 Siesta Dr in the Sarasota-side bridge parking lot at 8:30 PM nightly, weather permitting, and the group shares one LED light pod in shallow water under 4 feet deep. Book a night tour or text 941-782-9226.

Where to look on Siesta Key

Shells collect along the wet line where the waves stop, and in the shallows just offshore. Sand Dollar Island at Big Pass, at the south end of the island, is the place locals associate with sand dollars. See our keyhole sand dollar guide to tell a live one from an empty one before you pick it up.

Shelling is easier with a guide

You do not need to know the tides, the beaches or the shells. Pick a location, show up 20 minutes before 8:30 PM, and we handle the rest: gear, the light, the safety briefing and the show-and-tell at the end.

Fun Florida Tours runs a guided night shelling and snorkeling tour in shallow Gulf water at Siesta Key, Sarasota and Anna Maria Island. You wade in from shore with a guide, the group shares one bright LED light pod that lights up the bottom, and the water stays under 4 feet deep, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer. After 60 minutes in the water we spend 15 minutes on the sand for show-and-tell, where guides name everything the group found. Empty shells are yours to keep; anything alive goes back.
